Sweet Chilli chicken drumsticks is 3 step recipe. Marinate, fry and prepare sauce. The chicken is marinated first and then fried until golden crispy. Then its tossed in sweet and chilli sauce. The sauce is where the chicken gets the flavour from. I used chicken drumsticks. This recipe also works well with wings or you can use thighs as well. Also you can choose the chicken with skin or without.
MARINADE
The chicken is marinated in flour, corn flour, salt, paprika, black pepper, egg and oil. Leave it for around 30 minutes. But if you are in a rush you can just fry them after 10 minutes of marination.
FRYING THE CHICKEN
I shallow fried the chicken, you can deep fry also. Shallow frying will take around 25 minutes untill chicken is cooked inside. when dep frying it takes 15 minutes. Once the oil is hot, turn the heat medium.
GETTING THE SAUCE RIGHT
The sauce has an amazing balance of sweetness and chilli. Its made with garlic, soya sauce, ketchup, sweet chilli sauce, vinegar, brown sugar and honey. Different brands of tomatoe sauce have varied level of sugar in it. You can Adjust the flavour balance in the sauce accordingly. If you prefer spicy you can swap tomatoe sauce with Siracha sauce or add chilli flakes.
The fried chicken is tossed in the sauce so it coats it evenly. Its garnished with sesame, spring onions and chilli.
WHAT TO SERVE WITH SWEET CHILLI CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS
These drumsticks don’t have too much sauce or gravy but you can still enjoy them with steamed rice. They can also be served with Asian Salad ( Cabbage (red or green) julienned carrots, spring onions) For low carb version you can serve with Cauliflower rice too.

Ingredients
- 8 Chicken Drumsticks See Notes
- Oil For Frying See Notes
Marinade
- 2 tbsp Plain flour
- 2 tbsp Corn Flour
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 1 tsp Paprika
- 1 Egg
- 1 tbsp Oil
Sauce
- 1 tbsp Oil
- 1 tbsp Chopped Garlic
- 1 tbsp Soya Sauce
- 2 tbsp Tomatoe Ketchup
- 3 tbsp Sweet Chilli Sauce
- 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
- 1 tsp Vinegar
- 1 tbsp Honey
Garnish
- Seasame Seeds
- Spring onion finely sliced
- Red Chilli finely Sliced Optional
Instructions
Prepare Chicken
- Make sure chicken is dry, add all marination ingredients and mix well. Leave it for around 30 minutes.
- Heat oil in the pan. Once the oil is hot turn the flame to medium low. Fry chicken until golden crisp and fully cooked. If shallow frying it will take around 25 mins and deep frying should take 15 minutes
- Drain the drumsticks on a paper towel.
Prepare Sauce
- In a pan heat oil and fry garlic for a minute. Add all the ingredients and mix well.
- Once the sauce is bubbling add chicken and toss to coat the sauce evenly.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds, green onion and red Chilli (optional)
Notes
- You can also use chicken wings or thighs.
- Chicken can be deep fried or shallow fried.
