Gyros are Greek version of doner kebab or shawarma. It is typically made with lamb, beef or chicken wrapped in pita bread along with onions, tomatoes and tzakiti sauce. A quick and eay weeknight meal. Its amazing how very few ingredients gives such an amazing flavour. Its very filling, in my opinion it is a complete meal in itself and you don’t need any sides.
HOW TO MAKE CHICKEN GYROS
There are 3 elements to making Greek Chicken Gyros. Marinated grilled chicken, tzakiti sauce and fresh salad.
Marinade:
Chicken – you can choose between breast fillet or thigh fillets. Cut them into large chunks.
- Yoghurt
- Olive oil
- oregano
- Lemon Juice
- salt
- Blackpepper
- Paprika
Just combine the marinade and mix chicken. Leave it for at least 1 hour to marinate but the longer the marination time is, the better it is. Chicken is then cooked on grill pan and covered in foil to rest for 10 minutes. It is then cut into thin strips.
How to make Tzakiti Sauce
Tzakiti sauce is yoghurt sauce made with adding grated cucumbers, bit of garlic, olive oil and salt. Apart from being used in Gyros it can also be used as dip to go with crackers or as a sauce to go along with any BBQ or grilled meat.
Salad for Gyros
In addition to meat, Gyros are mostly filled with salad of cucumber, onions and tomatoes slightly dressed in lemon juice and salt. But you can have variations of by adding lettuce, jalapeños, olives etc. Sometimes Fries are also added in the gyros wraps.
Bread for Gyros
Greek pita is easily available in most super markets and its number one choice as its soft, fluffy and obviously authentic. But if its unavailable you can use any pita bread or flat bread.

Greek Chicken Gyros
Ingredients
- 500 g Boneless chicken
- 1/2 cup Greek Yoghurt
- 2 tbsp Olive oil
- 2 tbsp Lemon Juice
- 1 tbsp Oregano
- ½ tsp Paprika
- ½ tsp Blackpepper
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tbsp Oil (For grilling chicken)
Tzakiti
- 1 cup yoghurt
- 1/4 cup Cucumber grated
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tsp Crushed Garlic
Salad
- 1 cucumber chopped
- 1 onion chopped
- 1 tomatoe chopped
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- salt
Instructions
Cooking Chicken
- Combine all marinade ingredients in a bowl or zip lock bag and add chicken.
- Marinate for atleast 1 hour.
- Grill it on a pan with little oil. Turning it once its done on one side.
- Once chicken is done cover it with foil to rest for 10 mins.
- Cut it into strips.
Tzakiti
- Grate a cucumber and squeeze out the water using muslin cloth or tea towel.
- Add grated cucumber to yoghurt along with crushed garlic, olive oil and salt, and mix.
Salad
- Chop onions, tomatoe and cucumber, add lemon juice and salt.
Assembly
- Heat pita bread, arrange chicken strips, followed by tzakiti and salad, roll it and serve immediately.
